Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender David Luiz has spoken publicly about his long-standing battle with baldness, following the circulation of a recent photo that left fans stunned.
The 38-year-old Brazilian, renowned for his trademark curly hair during his time in the Premier League, addressed the issue in a video posted over the weekend. The image, which showed Luiz with a pronounced bald spot while playing for Brazilian side Fortaleza, prompted widespread reaction online, with some fans questioning whether it was even real.
Luiz, who returned to Brazil in 2021 after successful stints at Chelsea and Arsenal, revealed that he has been undergoing treatment for hair loss for several years.
“Over the years, I’ve lost a little hair. I’ve been treating baldness for many years,” he explained. “I used to love wearing caps in the early days. These days, it’s much harder to style my hair the way I like—with full curls.”
In the video, Luiz removed his cap to reveal his thinning hair, noting that maintaining his signature look had become increasingly challenging. However, his barber, who joined him in the video, downplayed the concerns, saying Luiz still had “huge potential” to maintain his iconic style.
After receiving a fresh haircut, Luiz appeared rejuvenated, running his fingers through his hair and expressing satisfaction with the transformation. The barber humorously asked, “Where did you stick the baldness?” as the footballer grinned and admired his new look.
The light-hearted moment ended with the barber praising Luiz’s appearance and insisting that the veteran defender still has “a lot of football ahead.”
Luiz joined Fortaleza at the beginning of the 2025 season and has played in all five of the club’s league fixtures so far. Fortaleza currently sit 14th in Brazil’s top division with five points from five matches.
