Hair loss is a common issue that affects both men and women, but people respond to it in different ways. While many embrace it as a natural part of aging, others find it deeply unsettling, with some experiencing significant emotional distress and a decline in self-esteem.
Research has shown that hair loss can lead to social anxiety, poor body image, and a sense of powerlessness, which may significantly affect one’s mental health and social life, according to Dr. Ashwini Nadkarni, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Finding solutions to slow or reverse hair loss can often result in improved self-esteem and overall well-being.
There are several approaches to addressing hair loss, including medication and laser therapy, but hair transplants have gained considerable popularity in recent years. These procedures boast high success rates, are relatively safe, and have minimal complications. However, they come at a steep cost, and results may not be fully apparent until 12 to 18 months after surgery, warns Dr. Yücel İskender, chief medical officer of NOVE Group. Despite these factors, many people who undergo hair transplants are generally pleased with the results. However, not all experiences are positive.
The Role of Expectations in Hair Transplant Outcomes
Hair transplant procedures can fail for a number of reasons. In some cases, patients may not be good candidates for the surgery due to factors such as age or the rapid progression of hair loss. In other instances, the results fall short due to inexperienced technicians, leading to unnatural hairlines or insufficient hair regrowth.
Helene Zupanc, a therapist specializing in anxiety and OCD who has undergone a hair transplant herself, explains that some patients may believe their surgery was unsuccessful due to unrealistic expectations or underlying body dysmorphic disorder, which can cause individuals to focus excessively on perceived flaws that cannot be corrected by a hair transplant.
Two men who experienced varying degrees of success with hair transplants share their stories below.
Shaun Eli Breidbart: A Subtle Transformation
Stand-up comedian Shaun Eli Breidbart was determined not to follow in the footsteps of his father and older brothers, who had all experienced hair loss. “Looking better for women was a prime reason” for not wanting to go bald, Breidbart explained.
At the age of 42, after using Rogaine with some success but still struggling with hair loss, Breidbart decided to pursue a hair transplant. The procedure involved a half-day surgery, during which his scalp was numbed with a series of injections, and a strip of skin was removed from the back of his head. The surgeon then extracted individual hair follicles from the strip and implanted them in areas of his scalp with thinning hair.
Although the recovery process required several precautions, including avoiding showers and exercise, Breidbart eventually saw the results after several months. While he was pleased with the outcome, he noted that the change was subtle. “It’s not like you go from bald to Demetri Martin or Fabio,” he said. People noticed a difference in his appearance but often couldn’t pinpoint the exact change. “They’d ask if I had lost weight,” Breidbart recalled.
A few years later, Breidbart opted for two additional transplants to improve coverage. Although his hair loss has stabilized over time, he remains realistic about the limits of hair transplants. “If they could clone hair and give me a full head of hair, I’d probably have another transplant, but absent that, there’s no way to go from balding to fully hairy,” he said.
Despite not feeling drastically more confident, Breidbart acknowledged that the transplants helped him maintain his self-esteem. “We don’t tend to see bald men as sex objects unless they’re still otherwise attractive or have some other quality,” he added.
Christopher Moore: A Disheartening Experience
Christopher Moore, a tutor, began losing his hair in his 20s, which led him to become increasingly self-conscious. By the age of 30, after unsuccessful attempts with two types of medication, Moore turned to hair transplants as a “last resort.”
After researching various clinics, Moore chose a London-based clinic with glowing reviews and before-and-after photos of successful results. However, his experience took a turn for the worse. While the surgery itself went smoothly, Moore quickly noticed that his transplanted hair grew slowly and didn’t provide the coverage he had been promised. After 18 months, it became clear that the procedure had failed, leaving him with a less-than-desirable outcome.
Now, Moore wears a hat almost constantly, even indoors, to hide his dissatisfaction with his appearance. “This is embarrassing, but the alternative, going without one, is almost literally inconceivable to me,” he said. “My appearance is no longer just an unfortunate quirk of nature but is the result of poorly done work completed under false pretenses.”
Despite the clinic offering a partial refund, Moore declined their offer due to the terms of a nondisclosure agreement, which he found unacceptable. He later discovered that the clinic had used photos of successful transplants performed by another surgeon, not the one who handled his procedure.
Moore regrets his decision to undergo surgery and, beyond his appearance, feels betrayed by the clinic’s unethical practices. “To go into a hair transplant clinic is to display your insecurity. There are people, even in expensive, modern-looking clinics, who will take advantage of this,” he warned.
Key Takeaways for Potential Hair Transplant Patients
As illustrated by the experiences of Breidbart and Moore, careful research and realistic expectations are essential for anyone considering a hair transplant. Dr. İskender stresses the importance of researching a clinic’s credentials and the experience of the medical team to ensure a successful outcome. Realistic expectations, he adds, are vital to achieving satisfactory results and avoiding disappointment.
For those considering a hair transplant, taking the time to thoroughly vet the clinic and its medical professionals is crucial in ensuring a positive experience and a more confident future.
