Kanpur, India — Two men tragically died within 48 hours after undergoing hair transplant surgeries performed by an untrained dentist, raising serious concerns about medical negligence and illegal practice.
Vinit Kumar Dubey, 37, and Mayank Katiyar, 32, both engineers, died following procedures carried out by Dr. Anushka Tiwari at her private clinic, Empire, in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Tiwari, who reportedly lacked the necessary training or qualifications to perform hair transplant surgery, surrendered to local authorities on Monday after weeks of evading arrest.
Dubey underwent surgery on March 13 but died two days later from a bacterial brain infection that led to encephalopathy. His wife, Jaya Tripathi, described his face as “swollen like a balloon” with bulging eyes, and said the couple had high hopes for his future, including a new job offer in the US. She also alleged that police delayed action on her complaint for nearly two months.
Katiyar died under similar circumstances in November, passing away just a day after his surgery. His mother recounted the rapid worsening of his condition, from facial swelling to loss of vision and breathing difficulties before his death.
Authorities conducted multiple raids across states to apprehend Tiwari, tracing her phone to Rohtak and Panipat before she eventually surrendered. Initially denying responsibility, she later admitted to performing the surgeries without proper tests, according to reports.
State lawyer Dilip Singh confirmed that Tiwari has been charged with culpable homicide for operating outside her professional domain and is now in jail. Investigations revealed severe medical negligence, including performing surgery on Dubey despite his diabetes and hypertension.
Tiwari’s clinic is registered under her husband, Dr. Saurabh, and she has publicly presented herself as a “dermatologist” on YouTube. Investigators are now reviewing the qualifications of other staff members involved.
The next court hearing is scheduled for June 6.
