Dr. Anushka Tiwari, the Uttar Pradesh doctor accused of negligence in connection with the deaths of two engineers following botched hair transplant surgeries, surrendered to authorities on Monday. She was promptly sent to jail, with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate remanding her to 14 days of judicial custody. Her anticipatory bail plea, previously set for a hearing on June 2, was rendered moot.
District Government Advocate Dilip Awasthi confirmed that authorities had gathered sufficient evidence to implicate Dr. Tiwari in the deaths. “We were ready with evidence that proved her complicity in the crime. With her surrender, the anticipatory bail plea is now irrelevant,” Awasthi said.
The Fatal Hair Transplants
The case centers on the deaths of two engineers, Vineet Dubey and Mayank, who died after undergoing hair transplant surgeries at Dr. Tiwari’s clinic in Kanpur. Vineet, a diabetic and hypertensive patient, experienced complications after the surgery and died on May 15, a day after being admitted to the hospital. His family accused Dr. Tiwari of medical negligence and filed a formal complaint.
Just days later, another death came to light. Mayank, an engineer from Farrukhabad, died on November 19, 2024, the day after undergoing a hair transplant at Dr. Tiwari’s clinic. His family, citing striking similarities to Vineet’s case, also contacted authorities.
Doctor Goes Into Hiding
After the complaints, Dr. Tiwari went into hiding, prompting a multi-state police search across Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Haryana. Despite her mobile location being traced to Rohtak and Panipat, Dr. Tiwari managed to elude authorities until she finally surrendered in Kanpur.
Dispute Over Responsibility
During earlier hearings, Dr. Tiwari denied performing the surgeries herself, claiming that they were carried out by another doctor, Manish Singh, a resident of Barra. However, government lawyer Awasthi challenged this claim, asserting that Dr. Tiwari had indeed performed the surgeries, going beyond her qualifications and medical scope.
A preliminary inquiry by a committee appointed by the Chief Minister’s Office revealed serious lapses in medical protocol. In Vineet’s case, it was found that standard pre-operative procedures were ignored, and his pre-existing health conditions were not adequately considered. Medical experts later concluded that Vineet developed a bacterial brain infection, which led to encephalopathy and eventually his death.
Regulatory Failures
The clinic where the surgeries took place is registered under the name of Dr. Tiwari’s husband, Dr. Saurabh. Authorities have since canceled the clinic’s registration due to non-compliance with medical regulations.
Police continue their investigation, gathering further documents related to both deaths, as they seek to uncover the full extent of the alleged negligence.
