Palmerston North’s Distinction Hair Design is pioneering a new solution for women struggling with hair loss who dream of regaining a luxurious, full head of hair.
Salon owner Kayla Garner and manager Brittany Ponsford, specialists in hair extensions for nearly a decade, often faced heartbreaking moments when clients with fragile, thinning hair could not be helped by traditional extension methods. For many, the only options were surgical hair transplant surgery or wigs—both of which have notable limitations.
“Wigs often aren’t secure enough,” Garner explained. “Women generally have to remove them to swim, shower, exercise, or even sleep.”
Seeking alternatives, Garner and Ponsford discovered the innovative mesh integration technique developed by Baciami Hair Extensions in Brisbane. This method, originally learned in the United Kingdom, involves placing a breathable mesh over the scalp and existing hair. Hair strands are threaded through the mesh and secured with beads, forming a strong base to attach wefts of ethically sourced natural hair.
The result is a natural, full-haired appearance that supports an active lifestyle with routine maintenance every six weeks. The mesh allows the scalp to remain healthy underneath, although the system requires periodic refreshing as natural hair continues to shed.
This solution is particularly suited for women experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy, alopecia, hormonal changes from pregnancy and childbirth, or natural aging. However, those recently undergoing chemotherapy must wait three to six months before treatment, as the beads interfere with medical scans.
Garner empathizes with the emotional impact hair loss has on women. “Hair is such a big part of identity,” she said. “I struggled with fine hair after having children and know how much confidence a full head of hair can restore. Confidence is not optional—it’s essential.”
The mesh integration system is a significant commitment, taking four to five hours to apply and costing between $1,100 and $3,500 depending on desired length and fullness. Financial assistance is available through Health NZ and Work and Income for qualifying clients with medical certification.
Distinction Hair Design recently launched the service in a private, two-chair room above the salon, ready to provide transformative results and renewed confidence.
“This new space will be filled with wonderful memories and happy tears,” Garner said. “We can’t wait to get started.”
