MANILA, Philippines – Aesthetic dermatologist Dr. Nina Monterola is urging people to include scalp care in their skincare regimen, emphasizing that the health of the scalp is just as important as that of the skin.
Dr. Monterola was invited by health and beauty retailer Watsons to speak at an event in Taguig on April 25, where the company unveiled its newly rebranded Naturals product line. During the event, Dr. Monterola conducted a scalp analysis on content creator Alexis Alonte to assess the health of her scalp and hair.
The analysis covered several aspects, including hair loss, follicle environment (measured by hair density), sensitivity to products and sunlight (by checking for dead skin cells), and hair thickness, which can vary based on genetics. Dr. Monterola confirmed that Alonte’s scalp and hair were relatively healthy.
“Scalp care is skincare too,” Dr. Monterola remarked, underscoring the significance of maintaining a healthy scalp.
The dermatologist also shared essential ingredients to look for in hair care products to ensure scalp and hair health. Among these, hyaluronic acid was highlighted for its ability to hydrate and balance the scalp, reducing dryness and irritation. Ceramides help seal in moisture, preventing breakage and strengthening brittle hair. Peptides support collagen production, strengthening hair and preventing hair loss, while niacinamide boosts keratin to fortify hair. Finally, retinol was noted for its role in regulating oil production in the hair.
With these tips, Dr. Monterola hopes to raise awareness about the importance of scalp care as an integral part of overall skincare.
