Younger Adults and Women Driving Growth in Hair Restoration Treatments, New ISHRS Survey Reveals

by Madonna

A recent survey by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) highlights a significant shift in hair restoration demographics, with younger adults and more women seeking treatment in 2024. According to the survey, 95% of first-time hair transplant patients were aged 20 to 35, indicating that hair loss concerns are no longer confined to middle age. Additionally, female patients undergoing surgical hair restoration increased by 16.5% since 2021.

The survey also revealed continued growth in the hair restoration field, fueled by advancements in both surgical and non-surgical hair care steps. ISHRS members reported a 20% increase in the average number of patients seen since 2021, with an average of 15 hair restoration surgeries performed monthly by each physician. This reflects the hands-on approach of ISHRS-certified doctors, who personally conduct the intricate procedures rather than delegating them to technicians—a stark contrast to unregulated black market clinics.

Rising Interest in Body Hair Transplantation

While scalp hair transplants remain the dominant procedure, the survey noted growing interest in body hair transplantation, where hair is transplanted from other parts of the body. This trend appeals to both men and women seeking fuller coverage beyond the scalp.

Patient Perspectives and Industry Challenges

Nearly half of patients surveyed expressed willingness to openly discuss their hair restoration journeys, often citing confidence and self-esteem as key motivations. Despite positive trends, ISHRS president Dr. Ricardo Mejia warned of increasing complications from unlicensed “black market” hair transplants performed by non-doctors, underscoring the importance of choosing certified medical professionals for hair care treatments.
