Police have seized equipment from a private clinic in Kanpur following the deaths of two engineers within 24 hours of undergoing hair transplant procedures. The clinic, allegedly run by unqualified dentist Dr. Anushka Tiwari, has come under intense scrutiny after the tragic incidents. Tiwari, who surrendered to authorities on May 26, is currently in judicial custody.
On June 4, police conducted a raid at the Empire Clinic under court orders, confiscating PRP machines, surgical instruments, and medical documents. During the search, Tiwari reportedly collapsed multiple times and required medical attention at CHC Kalyanpur. Authorities are also searching for her husband, Dr. Saurabh Tripathi, believed to be linked to the case.
The first victim, engineer Vineet Dubey, underwent a hair transplant at the clinic on March 13, 2025. Post-procedure, he suffered severe facial swelling and pain, leading to hospitalization and his death two days later. His wife filed a complaint through the Chief Minister’s grievance portal, resulting in an FIR filed on May 9 under charges of death by negligence.
Within 24 hours of a similar procedure, another engineer, Mayank Katiyar, passed away due to complications reportedly related to the hair transplant done on November 18, 2024. His family stated he experienced swelling and chest pain shortly after treatment.
A probe revealed both deaths were caused by complications from botched hair transplant procedures performed by Dr. Tiwari, who lacks the qualifications to conduct such surgeries. Holding only a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree, she allegedly misrepresented herself as a hair transplant specialist, promoting her services on YouTube. According to Indian medical guidelines, only certified dermatologists or plastic surgeons are authorized to perform hair transplant surgery.
Further investigation by Kanpur’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Hari Dutt Negi, uncovered that both victims had pre-existing health conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which increased their risk during the procedures. Vineet Dubey’s post-mortem report cited cerebral edema and severe infections caused by unsterilized equipment as the cause of death.
Meanwhile, a three-member health panel has been established to examine the clinic’s legality and the extent of unauthorized hair transplant surgeries conducted.
This case raises serious concerns about patient safety, hygiene, and the critical importance of qualified professionals performing hair transplant surgeries, highlighting risks that can result from unregulated clinics.
