Scientists in Japan may be closing in on an affordable, natural solution to hair loss—one that could benefit millions struggling with thinning hair.
In a promising study, researchers at Rohto Pharmaceutical Co. discovered that two plant-based ingredients—Phellodendron bark and chinpi (sun-dried mandarin orange peel)—can significantly stimulate hair growth. These extracts were shown to increase production of Placental Growth Factor (PlGF), a protein critical to hair follicle development.
“When Phellodendron Bark extract or Citrus Tinpi extract was added to human hair papilla cells, they produced approximately 2.1 times and 2.2 times more PlGF, respectively, than cells that did not receive the extract,” the researchers explained.
PlGF is secreted by dermal papilla cells, located at the base of hair follicles, and plays a vital role in initiating the hair growth cycle. Although less studied than other growth factors, the Rohto team recognized PlGF’s potential early and has focused its research on finding safe, accessible ways to boost its levels.
The use of these common and inexpensive botanical ingredients is a significant advancement. “This technology is expected to be applied not only to hair but also to eyelashes and other areas,” the company noted.
With over 15.4 million people affected by hair loss in the UK alone, current treatments—including wigs, topical solutions, and prescription medications—can be expensive and only partially effective. The goal of this study was to identify hair health tips that could be translated into effective products for broader use.
Rohto Pharmaceutical has long invested in hair health advice, offering everything from shampoos to regrowth serums. But this latest breakthrough could signal a new generation of plant-powered treatments designed for both men and women.
Researchers plan to develop consumer-friendly products based on the study’s findings, aiming to make hair health support more effective, affordable, and natural.
