At the 2025 Revolutionizing Atopic Dermatitis (RAD) Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Tiffany Mayo shared critical insights on the complex relationship between atopic dermatitis (AD) and hair loss during a Q&A with HCPLive.
Dr. Mayo, an assistant professor of Dermatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, highlighted key takeaways from her presentation, Complex Cases: AD & Hair Loss. She emphasized that the severity of alopecia is not always linked to the extent of the disease but often relates to the patient’s experience and quality of life. Even limited areas of scalp involvement can cause intense itching and disrupt sleep, underscoring the need for effective treatment regardless of the affected body surface area.
“There is a clear association between alopecia areata and atopic dermatitis,” Dr. Mayo explained. “It’s important to ask patients about scalp symptoms, as managing their AD may also help improve hair loss.” She encouraged dermatologists to acknowledge the impact hair loss has on patients and to provide supportive, comprehensive care.
Looking beyond atopic dermatitis, Dr. Mayo expressed excitement about ongoing research in scarring alopecia and hidradenitis suppurativa—two challenging dermatological conditions with many unanswered questions. She hopes increased research will translate into better treatments and improved patient outcomes.
Dr. Mayo also praised disease-specific conferences like RAD 2025 for fostering a deeper understanding of new therapies and disease phenotypes. “These meetings help us refine treatment decisions and deliver more personalized care,” she said.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Mayo is actively involved in community education and quality improvement projects aimed at raising awareness of dermatological diseases across diverse skin tones. She is particularly focused on improving understanding and treatment of scarring alopecia and its overlap with atopic dermatitis and hair loss.
Dr. Mayo’s work highlights the importance of addressing hair loss as part of a holistic approach to managing atopic dermatitis, improving both hair transplant recovery alternatives and overall patient well-being.
