Bald Men Are Bringing Back the Toupee — And Women Are Surprisingly On Board

by Madonna

As hair transplants grow in popularity, some balding men—particularly millennials—are opting for a different approach: the classic toupee. Instead of costly procedures abroad, many men with receding hairlines are reviving this retro hairpiece trend, reminiscent of styles from decades past.

Interestingly, women are responding positively to the comeback of faux hair. Madi Marotta, a content creator based in Tennessee, recently encouraged normalization of men wearing toupees, comparing the look to women’s widely accepted use of hair extensions. Her message aligns with a growing cultural shift that challenges the stigma around male baldness.

According to the American Hair Loss Association, by age 35, roughly two-thirds of American men experience noticeable hair loss, and by age 50, about 85% have significantly thinning hair. Notably, around 25% of men with male pattern baldness begin losing hair before age 21.

To address hair loss, men across age groups have tried a variety of solutions—from $5,000 hair transplants in Istanbul to $16,000 robotic hair restoration treatments in New York City. However, many men mindful of costs prefer non-invasive alternatives such as hairpieces.

Phil Ring, a hair replacement specialist from New York, shared a TikTok video demonstrating how he applies a small toupee to cover thinning areas, explaining that he’s not yet ready for a full restoration. Meanwhile, Nashville influencer Tyler Stanton gave his 2.1 million TikTok followers a detailed look at his toupee application, revealing that even close friends were unaware he was wearing one.

San Diego hairstylist Emily Cheney, known as the “Toupee Queen” on social media, has crafted custom hairpieces that cost around $3,800. Her work has garnered significant attention, with some female viewers expressing admiration for men who choose to wear toupees.

“He’s so handsome,” commented one viewer on Cheney’s viral toupee video, which has amassed over 62 million views. Another added, “I hope men know girls don’t look down on this at all.” Supporters praised the confidence toupees can bring, with one fan calling it “true masculinity” and highlighting how it is “so much more attractive than being angry about balding.” Another woman expressed a wish that more straight men embraced the style, saying, “I would not care at ALL if a man had a toupee — not when it gives so much confidence.”

As the toupee reclaims its place in modern men’s grooming, the message is clear: embracing hairpieces is becoming a confident, accepted choice rather than a source of shame.
