3 Shampoos That Worsen Hair Loss: Expert Hair Health Advice

by Madonna

If you’re struggling with hair thinning or excessive shedding, your shampoo could be part of the problem. Experts warn that certain shampoo ingredients may irritate the scalp, weaken hair strands, and even harm hair follicles—leading to increased breakage and hair loss over time. Fortunately, choosing the right shampoo can improve hair health and reduce shedding. Here are three types of shampoos to avoid if you’re facing hair loss issues.

Shampoos Containing Silicones

Silicones are often added to shampoos to boost shine and smoothness, but dermatologist Dr. Enrizza P. Factor cautions against their impact on scalp health. “Silicones in shampoo can cause hair loss by coating the scalp so that nutrients cannot be absorbed,” she explains. This barrier effect can deprive hair follicles of essential nourishment, weakening the hair over time.

Shampoos with Sulfates

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a common sulfate detergent found in many shampoos and conditioners, is known for stripping natural oils from hair, leaving it dry, brittle, and prone to damage. Hairstylist Lauren Udoh highlights that sulfate-based shampoos can worsen hair loss by causing scalp irritation. Jean Will, co-founder of NiaWigs Inc., adds that sulfates can trigger allergic scalp reactions, increase frizziness, and—when used long-term—may disrupt hormones, further aggravating hair thinning.

Shampoos Containing Sodium Chloride

Sodium chloride, frequently used as a thickening agent in mass-market shampoos, is not recommended for those experiencing hair loss, says Dr. Yoram Harth, Medical Director of MDhair. He notes that sodium chloride can dry out the scalp, causing redness and itching. This irritation may damage hair follicles and contribute to further hair loss.

Hair Health Tips:

To protect your hair and scalp, opt for gentle, sulfate-free shampoos that nourish rather than strip. Avoid products heavy in silicones or sodium chloride to reduce irritation and support healthy hair growth. Always check ingredient labels carefully and consider consulting a dermatologist for personalized hair health advice.
