A growing number of Australians are traveling to Turkey for hair transplant surgery, drawn by significantly lower hair transplant costs despite potential risks involved in undergoing the procedure abroad.
Shane and Michael, lifelong friends from Adelaide, are among those making the journey to Istanbul together. After 33 years of friendship filled with shared experiences, the two men are now facing a new challenge side-by-side: hair loss.
“We’ve covered a lot in those 33 years. Now, what we’re about to go through is just the icing on the cake,” Michael shared.
Turkey has become a hotspot for medical tourism, especially for hair transplant recovery at a fraction of the price charged in Australia. While a hair transplant can cost upwards of $30,000 in Australia, the price in Turkey often hovers around $6,000, attracting many seeking affordable solutions.
However, not all experiences overseas are positive. David Allen’s transplant attempt in Turkey turned problematic when he discovered the clinic was operating out of a children’s cancer hospital, with additional unexpected charges. Allen ultimately canceled the procedure and returned to Australia, later establishing a medical tourism agency to help others avoid similar pitfalls.
Sydney plastic surgeon Dr. Laith Barnouti warns of the risks associated with cheaper hair transplants abroad. “There’s a higher chance of infection, sub-optimal results, and depleted donor sites,” he explained. Barnouti also notes that many procedures in Turkey are performed by nurses or technicians rather than qualified doctors, increasing the risk for patients.
Despite these concerns, Shane and Michael report no complications so far with their treatment.
As more Australians consider hair transplant surgery overseas, weighing the benefits of reduced costs against potential health risks and recovery outcomes remains crucial.
