Viral TikTok Hair Hack Draws Expert Warning Over Potential Hair Loss Risks

by Madonna

A TikTok beauty trend involving rosemary oil has amassed over 88 million views, but medical experts are cautioning users against potential side effects, including hair loss.

The viral hack, popularised by beauty influencers on the platform, claims that rosemary oil can stimulate hair growth, thicken strands, prevent shedding, and even reverse baldness. However, health professionals warn that improper application of the oil could lead to adverse results.

Dr. Gizem Seymenoglu, a London-based hair loss specialist at Longevita Hair Transplant, said that while rosemary oil has gained attention for its supposed benefits, misuse could do more harm than good.

“Many people apply rosemary oil to their scalps hoping to get the same results as minoxidil,” she explained. “But, as with anything, improper use can be damaging. Using undiluted rosemary oil, especially on an already irritated scalp, can harm the skin and hair follicles—potentially resulting in hair shedding.”

Despite TikTok’s enthusiasm for the product, Dr. Seymenoglu warned that excessive use of the oil is counterproductive. “Moderation is key,” she said. “Start with a small amount and gradually increase usage. Overapplication can clog hair follicles, which may lead to further hair loss.”

She noted that while rosemary oil itself is not directly responsible for long-term hair loss, some users may experience temporary shedding at the beginning of use. “This shedding can actually be a sign that the oil is stimulating the hair cycle, pushing out older hairs to make way for new growth,” Dr. Seymenoglu said.

To minimize risks, she recommends diluting rosemary oil with carrier oils such as coconut, castor, or jojoba oil to reduce its potency.

Meanwhile, some users are turning to alternative treatments such as the UKLASH Hair Growth Serum, which retails at $38 for a 30ml bottle and reportedly sold out within four days of launch last year. Marketed as a product that can reduce hair loss by up to 95% and boost hair density, the serum contains active ingredients like pea extract (pisum sativum) and turmeric.

While TikTok continues to serve as a platform for trending advice across beauty, wellness, cooking, and more, experts advise users to proceed with caution and consult professionals before adopting new health-related routines.
